The research overview covers the most central parts of Swedish multilingualism research, in light of the international knowledge situation. Here is research on the educational system’s way of meeting the large group of pupils in secondary school that have a different background from those that are all-Swedish (wholeSwedish) (part III).
In the same way, research on society’s education measures for adult immigrants and adult immigrant language learning in the classroom and outside it (Part IV) is considered (taken into account). As a background to these two parts, research on second language learning is presented, with special focus on Swedish as a second language, and research on first language acquisition in a minority situation, focusing on the mother tongue of multilingual children (part II). Research on the social frameworks for how multilingualism is handled in laws and regulations, and why practice often differs from what was intended is discussed in Part 1. The work was conducted by eight researchers led by Kenneth Hyltenstam, Monica Axelsson and Inger Lindberg. The research overview has been reviewed by peer review.
